HYPOTHYROID HARMS CIRCULATION
Hypothyroidism can cause a weakened heart function. Hypothyroidism affects the cardiovascular system in several ways:
Decreased cardiac output: Hypothyroidism can reduce cardiac output by 30% to 50%1,3.
Impaired contractility: It causes impaired cardiac muscle relaxation and decreased left ventricular contractility2,3.
Reduced heart rate: Hypothyroidism leads to a decreased heart rate, contributing to lower cardiac output3,6.
Increased vascular resistance: The condition causes increased systemic vascular resistance and decreased arterial compliance3,4.
Diastolic dysfunction: Hypothyroidism can result in impaired ventricular relaxation and diastolic dysfunction2,3.
Reduced stroke volume: Both at rest and during exercise, hypothyroidism decreases left ventricular stroke volume2.
Potential heart failure: Untreated and severe hypothyroidism can lead to biventricular heart failure, especially when profound and prolonged2.
These cardiovascular effects of hypothyroidism collectively contribute to a weakened heart function. However, it's important to note that many of these physiological abnormalities can be reversed with proper thyroid hormone replacement therapy and restoration of a euthyroid state2,3.
HYPOTHYROID ALSO HARMS FAT DIGESTION
Hypothyroidism impairs bile flow and fat digestion through several interconnected mechanisms:
Reduced Bile Flow: Hypothyroidism decreases the flow of bile from the liver into the duodenum1,3,5,7. Studies in both humans and animals show that bile flow is significantly reduced in hypothyroid states, leading to delayed emptying of the biliary tract and increased transit time for bile to reach the intestine1,2,5,7.
Gallbladder Dysfunction: Thyroid hormones help regulate the contraction of the gallbladder. In hypothyroidism, gallbladder contraction is weakened, causing bile to become thicker and form sludge, which can lead to gallstones5,6,7. This thickened bile further impairs its flow into the intestine.
Altered Sphincter of Oddi Function: The sphincter of Oddi controls the release of bile into the small intestine. In hypothyroidism, the absence of the relaxing effect of thyroid hormones increases the sphincter's tension, making it harder for bile to flow into the intestine2,4,5,7.
Changes in Bile Composition: Hypothyroidism alters liver cholesterol metabolism, resulting in bile that is supersaturated with cholesterol. This not only increases the risk of gallstones but also makes bile less effective at emulsifying fats5,7.
Fat Malabsorption: Because bile is essential for breaking down and absorbing dietary fats, reduced bile flow and altered bile composition in hypothyroidism lead to fat malabsorption. This can cause digestive symptoms such as greasy, floating stools, bloating, nausea after fatty meals, and deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K)6,7,8.
THIN THE BILE
To thin your bile and support better bile flow, you can use a combination of dietary strategies, lifestyle habits, and specific supplements or herbs. Here are evidence-supported approaches:
1. Eat Bitter Foods and Herbs
Bitter foods (such as dandelion greens, arugula, artichoke, beets, and citrus fruits) stimulate bile production and flow by triggering gallbladder contraction2,3,4,6.
Herbal bitters (like Swedish bitters) or tinctures can be taken before meals to promote bile release2,5.
2. Include Glycine and Taurine
These amino acids are essential for bile formation. Glycine is found in bone broth, fish, and collagen; taurine is found in meat, fish, and seaweed2,4.
3. Use Healthy Fats
Consuming moderate amounts of healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, fatty fish) with meals stimulates bile release2,3.
4. Stay Hydrated
Adequate hydration helps keep bile less viscous and supports its flow2.
5. Try Specific Herbs and Supplements
Artichoke leaf extract has been shown in studies to significantly increase bile secretion3,4,7.
Milk thistle, dandelion root, ginger, turmeric, peppermint, and fenugreek are traditional and research-backed herbs that support bile production and flow3,4,5,6.
Choline (found in egg yolks) and betaine (found in beets and spinach) can help stimulate bile production3.
Bile salt supplements (like TUDCA) can directly support bile flow, especially if you have had your gallbladder removed or have persistent symptoms3,7.
6. Avoid Processed Foods and Identify Triggers
Processed foods, sugars, and simple carbs can worsen liver inflammation and contribute to thickened bile2.
Food sensitivities or allergies can also affect bile flow, so consider identifying and removing triggering foods2.
7. Manage Stress and Practice Deep Breathing
Chronic stress can reduce bile release. Deep diaphragmatic breathing can stimulate the liver and improve bile flow6.

THAT’S ME TOO
I have #3, 4, 9, 11, 12, 15, 16. I used to have some trouble with 1, 2, 5 & 10. My chiropractor said the edema around my ankles area was due to a weak heart, so I asked AI if Hypothyroid can cause a weak heart. And that’s where I got the into above. I have some info from James Sloane on Thyroid and Hypothyroid in my Natural Remedies book, but I wanted more info, so I did a little searching on Youtube. I found Dr. Childs’ Thyroid videos, linked below. He has some surprising info about carbs, protein, fruit drinks, adaptogenic herbs, supplements, T2 etc. He’s been making videos for 8 years. He hasn’t made a new one for 2 months, I think, so maybe he’s covered everything on that topic. I listened to several of the videos today. I’m eager to try T2 cream if I can find it at Walmart or a drug store. Being cold and having cold hands is my main complaint. My shortened eyebrows are what seem to prove convincingly that I have Hypothyroid. I just found that tonsillectomy can contribute to hypothyroid. I had one when I was 6.
TONSILLECTOMY
Tonsillectomy has been associated with an increased risk of developing autoimmune diseases, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and hypothyroidism1,4,6. Large cohort studies have shown that individuals who have had their tonsils removed have a higher incidence of autoimmune thyroid diseases compared to the general population. Specifically, the risk of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (a leading cause of hypothyroidism) is significantly elevated after tonsillectomy, with standardized incidence ratios (SIR) of 1.99 {approx. double the normal rate} for males and 1.50 for females6.
The proposed mechanism is that tonsillectomy may disrupt immune function, as tonsils play a role in immune regulation and may act as a reservoir for T cells outside the thymus4,6. This immune disruption could contribute to the development of autoimmune conditions, including those affecting the thyroid.
However, while there is a statistically significant association, this does not mean that tonsillectomy directly causes hypothyroidism in every individual. The increased risk is relative, and other factors such as genetics and environmental triggers also play important roles6.
In summary, tonsillectomy can increase the risk of hypothyroidism, particularly autoimmune hypothyroidism, but it is not a direct or guaranteed cause for every patient1,4,6.
COMPARING HYPYTHYROID & HASHIMOTO’S
Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism are closely related but distinct conditions:
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, causing inflammation and gradual damage. Over time, this can lead to hypothyroidism, as the thyroid becomes less able to produce hormones2.
Hypothyroidism, on the other hand, refers to the condition of having an underactive thyroid gland that doesn't produce enough thyroid hormones. While Hashimoto's is a common cause of hypothyroidism, other factors like iodine deficiency, certain medications, or thyroid surgery can also lead to hypothyroidism2.
Symptoms of both conditions often overlap, such as fatigue, weight gain, and sensitivity to cold, but Hashimoto's may also involve specific signs like thyroid gland enlargement (goiter) due to inflammation2.
FOR HYPOTHYROID
#1 Seaweed is a natural source of iodine, which is essential for thyroid function. Incorporating seaweed into your diet can help maintain healthy thyroid activity
#2 Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, a mineral that supports thyroid health Consuming these nuts regularly can help regulate your thyroid hormones
#3 Eggs are a good source of iodine and selenium, both of which are important for maintaining thyroid health. Including eggs in your diet can help ensure your thyroid gets the nutrients it needs.
DMSO
{Something} inspired a 1982 study to determine if DMSO suppressed thyroid autoantibodies (which were experimentally induced in rats). It did, and also was found to increase the ratio of IgM to IgG plaque forming cells (which suggested a true immunoregulatory effect). In turn, some patients report that DMSO benefits autoimmune thyroiditis. {See DMSO For AutoImmune Conditions.}
1. DMSO and Immunoglobulin Production in Animal Models
A study in mice demonstrated that DMSO administration led to significant reductions in serum IgG and IgA, but not IgM, after 7 days of treatment. DMSO-treated mice showed altered immune responses, including changes in plaque-forming cell (PFC) numbers for IgM and IgG, and delayed peak responsiveness, indicating that DMSO can modulate humoral immunity6. This supports the idea that DMSO has immunoregulatory effects, although the direction (suppression or enhancement) may depend on timing and specific immune parameters.2. DMSO and B Cell Differentiation
Research using human lymphoid cell lines found that DMSO inhibits both spontaneous and IL-6-induced differentiation into IgM-secreting cells, as well as cell proliferation, at concentrations lower than those affecting proliferation. This suggests DMSO can suppress certain antibody-producing activities in vitro9. While this study did not specifically address thyroid autoantibodies, it provides mechanistic support for DMSO's immunomodulatory potential.3. Broader Immune Modulation by DMSO
DMSO is recognized for its broad immunomodulatory properties, affecting both cellular and humoral immune responses in various animal models, though effects can be complex and context-dependent6,9. No direct evidence links DMSO to reduced thyroid autoantibodies in humans, but the animal and in vitro data suggest plausible mechanisms.
DR. JANINE
Do you have Hashimoto's? Here are some natural tips how to lower your thyroid antibodies. So we know that our thyroid antibodies can go up when we do have Hashimoto's, which is autoimmune and this is often due to leptin resistance. So if you haven't seen my other videos on leptin resistance, make sure you check them out. But based on this review article, it's really interesting to know that for Hashimoto's it was found that things like iodine, selenium, vitamin D and gluten had an impact on the autoimmunity and the effect on that low thyroid function with Hashimoto's. So my tips here is get more natural sunlight of course to up your vitamin D as well as increasing your selenium. So eating a couple of Brazil nuts daily is going to increase your selenium as well as increasing your iodine. So eating more seafood is really going to help with getting enough iodine and other important minerals, things like zinc for your thyroid function as well.

Can hypothyroidism change your face? Absolutely, it can. But just because it can doesn't mean it will. These are two separate things that you should understand. So how can it change your face? Well, one of the first things that it can do is cause hair loss. So hair loss on the top of your head, but more than that, it can also cause hair loss on the lateral 1/3 of your eyebrow. So right where I'm touching right here. If you are losing hair there or maybe you knew it was there before and now it's gone, that is a very, very, very sensitive sign of hypothyroidism. In addition, low thyroid function can cause generalized facial puffiness. So if you're waking up in the morning, and your entire face is puffy, maybe a little more round than usual, that could be a sign of low thyroid function. Now that symptom does tend to fade as you wake up and walk throughout the day, because your face will be draining through your lymphatic system. In addition to that, you might notice puffy eyes. So again, when you wake up, there's two different things that can occur. You can have a generalized facial swelling, but you can also have isolated swelling around the eyes.
SWEAT
Today we're gonna talk about 5 easy things that you can do right now to fix that. #1 is to sweat more often. Sweating is a simple and effective way for your body to eliminate toxins. In fact, we know from some studies that sweating is the body's preferred way to eliminate them. Meaning, all things being equal, your body will preferentially eliminate toxins through your sweat, compared to some of the other pathways that we're soon going to discuss. But here's the problem. Thyroid patients have a hard time sweating. Not only is your body less likely to sweat, because of your thyroid problem, low thyroid states result in the symptom of fatigue, which means you're probably much less likely to exercise as well. The good news is you don't have to rely solely on exercise, if you want to work up a good sweat. One of the most simple ways to work up a sweat is with the use of a sauna. And not only will using a sauna help you sweat, it also comes with additional benefits to stress, sleep, and even weight loss. As far as which sauna to use, you have two options. The 1st is a traditional Finnish steam sauna. This type of sauna heats you up from the outside and usually has to be dialed up to a much higher temperature compared to this type of sauna we're gonna talk about next. The second type of sauna to consider is called a far infrared sauna. These saunas take advantage of light therapy and actually heat you up from the inside out. Because of this, they often result in a deeper sweat compared to using a Finnish sauna, and the far infrared light that's found inside of them provide additional benefits to your body as well. Both types of sauna can work to help you work up a sweat, but my recommendation would be to stick to a far infrared sauna if one is available to you. Your goal should be to get 60 minutes of total sauna time each and every week. Ideally you would split this up into multiple sauna sessions of anywhere between 15 to 20 minutes each time, but both types of saunas are effective at activating heat shock proteins, which enhance detox pathways by assisting in protein folding. On top of this, both types of sauna activate cytokines, which can reduce inflammation across the entire body.
EXERCISE
The #2 thing that you wanna do is improve lymphatic drainage. Your lymphatic channels don't get the attention they deserve, especially when it comes to detox. These channels, much like your arteries and your veins, move fluid, proteins and cellular waste throughout your body. They act as a cleanup network to bring back things that have exited your circulation so that they can reenter that circulation and be eliminated by your liver or your kidneys. The big difference between your lymphatic system and your arteries and your veins is that the lymphatic system is not under pressure, meaning your body won't automatically move lymphatic fluid back into circulation without some assistance on your part. This is where you can step in and make a difference. Here's how to do it. The first way is through exercise and muscle contraction. Any movement of your muscles will increase lymphatic pressure and improve lymphatic flow and drainage. Simple movements like walking can do this, but lifting weights and exercising is especially helpful. The second thing you can try is massage therapy. Massage therapists are trained to give massages such that they enhance lymphatic flow, so feel free to use this as an excuse to go get a massage. Similarly, you can try what is called dry brushing. Dry brushing is essentially a form of body massage that uses dry brush bristles. By scraping these bristles across your skin, you can exfoliate the skin but also enhance lymphatic drainage. Using one will also reduce stress and may improve skin texture as well. The fourth thing you can do is stretch regularly. And the fifth thing you can try is yoga. These ones are self-explanatory, because pretty much any exercise or movement that you do will enhance this process. The key to getting results is just be consistent.
LIVER DETOX
#3 is support liver function. Your liver is considered the master detoxifier for your entire body. It's filled with proteins and enzymes that help breakdown pretty much anything you come into contact with and even pharmaceutical medications. Not only does it help claw through toxins and compounds for elimination, it also provides a direct route of elimination through your bile ducts. But on top of all this, it also happens to be the major site of T3 thyroid hormone production. No matter how you look at it, improving liver health is one of the most important things you can do as a thyroid patient. The question becomes, how can you ensure that your liver is doing its job so you can take advantage of all of these things? Traditionally, doctors do this by looking at a couple of liver function tests, including AST and ALT. If either of these enzymes are elevated, it indicates that your liver is under some sort of stress, or experiencing some sort of damage. Right now, the most common cause of liver stress and liver damage is fatty liver disease from insulin resistance, and fatty liver disease occurs in thyroid patients at a higher rate compared to the average population. If you have access to your AST or ALT levels, take a look at the value and make sure both are less than 20. Any value higher than this may indicate that your liver is under stress and may be experiencing damage. While AST and ALT are helpful, they only tell you if your liver cells are damaged. What they don't tell you is how active proteins and enzymes in your liver cells are. The good news is that even if you don't know exactly how active these enzymes are, there are still things that you can do to improve their function. The first way to do this is by consuming the right foods. What you're looking for here are foods that are high in sulfur: cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower. Provide your body with glucosinolates, which are sulfur containing compounds. Thyroid patients should try to get at least one serving of cruciferous vegetables into their diet each and every day. And don't worry about the goitrogens found in these compounds either, because this number can be reduced by simply steaming {or cooking} your veggies before you eat them. Another thing that you'll want to do is eat more spices. Specifically here, we're looking at turmeric and ginger. Both of these spices have been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect in the body and may up-regulate detoxification pathways in the liver. My recommendation is to add these spices to either smoothies, or tea, but you can also look at making “golden milk”. The third thing you can do is take liver support supplements. Two of my favorites for thyroid patients include milk thistle and calcium D glucurate.
BOWEL MOVEMENTS
#4 on the list is ensuring that you have regular bowel movements, because your thyroid controls the kinetic movement of your bowels. Thyroid patients often suffer from Constipation. Why does this matter? Because your stool is another huge route of toxin removal. In fact, your body tends to send out fat soluble toxins through your stools and water soluble toxins through your kidneys. When you are constipated, your stool stays in your body longer, which means those same harmful compounds stay in longer as well. Constipation can also damage your gut microbiome, which will have negative effects on hormone balance and T3 levels. As a thyroid patient, your goal should be to have at least one productive bowel movement each and every day. And if you're thinking that's impossible, try these things. First, make sure that your thyroid is optimized and you're taking enough thyroid hormone. In many cases, just getting on the right type and dose of thyroid medication can completely solve constipation. Second, if you're still having issues, you can consider adding vitamin C and magnesium citrate. These two supplements will help you have a bowel movement, but they won't fix the underlying problem. Third, if you're still having problems, you can try taking supplements which have a pro-kinetic effect on the bowels. These supplements actually help with peristalsis, which propels the stool forward. Fourth, keep your gut healthy by using things like prebiotics, probiotics and L-glutamine. And, if all else fails, look for overgrowth, bacterial and fungal syndromes. These are particularly common in thyroid patients, because they suffer from a reduction or a slowing down in the movement of the bowels. You may find that you actually need antibiotics {herbs} to fix this problem. When it comes to evaluating the quality of stools, use the Bristol stool chart as your guide. Your stool should fall in the type-4 range. The fifth thing you can do is support kidney function. Your kidneys receive about 20 to 25% of blood flow from your heart, even though they are a relatively tiny mass compared to other organs in your body. This is because they function as the filtration system for all of your blood. Except for a few people that have chronic kidney disease, most thyroid patients don't actually have damage to their kidneys. But this doesn't mean that thyroid patients aren't putting extra stress on their kidneys. When it comes to thyroid patients, they are often consuming things that are highly caffeinated, have a lot of sugar, and promote dehydration, even medications or supplements can put additional unwanted stress on your kidneys. When you compound this with the fact that 75% of adults are chronically dehydrated, your kidneys are probably working overtime, even if they aren't damaged. So what can you do? The easiest and most simple thing you can do is simply drink more water and in the process, avoid beverages that contain high amounts of caffeine and promote dehydration. How much water you should consume is hotly debated, but here's what I recommend. Aim to get at least a half a gallon of filtered water each day, or enough that your urine runs clear at least once per day. If you are someone who is worried about actual kidney damage, then you can get a couple of easy lab tests to confirm. Kidney damage is not usually missed by doctors, but it never hurts to double check. Doing these five things can provide an almost near immediate boost to thyroid function, but if you want to take that boost even further then I'd recommend looking into thyroid support supplements as well.
